Sounds first, letters second. Building readers the natural way

We introduce letters by their sounds (not their names) first: "a" says /æ/ as in "apple," not "ay." This systematic phonics approach, used with letter cards, games, and songs, gives children the tools to decode new words independently.

Kannada's beautiful script is introduced through its inherent vowel-consonant structure. Children learn swaragalu (vowels) first, then vyanjanagalu (consonants), using visual charts, clay letters, and rhythm-based chants.

Once individual sounds are secure, children learn to blend: /c/-/a/-/t/ = "cat." This breakthrough moment, when a child reads their first word, is one of the most joyful milestones we celebrate.

Every day, our teachers read aloud from picture books: in English, Kannada, and sometimes both in the same session. Children hear rich vocabulary, sentence rhythms, and the magic of narrative. Studies show that being read to is one of the single most powerful predictors of reading success.

Nursery rhymes in English ("Twinkle Twinkle") and Kannada folk songs ("Ondu Sanna Magu") build phonological awareness, vocabulary, memory, and the natural rhythms of each language. Children who know many rhymes become confident readers.

"Show and Tell," morning circle discussions, and "How was your weekend?" conversations create safe spaces for children to speak, be listened to, and build the confidence to express themselves. Every child's voice is heard and valued.

Before a child can write, they need to be ready: physically and mentally

Wavy lines, loops, zigzags, and spirals. We practise these shapes long before introducing letters. These patterns train the hand and wrist for the movements needed in writing Kannada baraha and English letters.

Dotted letters and numbers to trace, sandpaper letters to feel with the fingers, and sand trays to draw in. Multi-sensory tracing builds muscle memory for letterforms before pen hits paper.

A child who draws a cat and tells a story about it is already writing; they are creating meaning with marks on a page. We honour drawing as a powerful form of early literacy and never rush children to "proper" letters before they are ready.
