Class 1 Admission Age in Karnataka: What Parents Need to Know

The short answer

  • In Karnataka, a child must be 6 years old on 1 June of the academic year to join Class 1.[1]
  • For 2026-27, the government allowed a relaxation of up to 60 days, so children who are about 5 years 10 months on 1 June 2026 can also be admitted.[2]
  • These rules have changed almost every year since 2022, so always confirm the current year's rule before you plan.

Why did the age change to six?

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 replaced the old 10+2 system with a 5+3+3+4 structure. Its first part, the Foundational Stage, covers ages 3 to 8: three years of preschool or Anganwadi, followed by Classes 1 and 2.[3] Counting forward from age 3, a child reaches Class 1 at age 6.

This also matches the Right to Education Act, 2009, which defines a "child" for free and compulsory elementary education as someone aged 6 to 14.[4]

Karnataka ordered the six-year minimum in 2022, then postponed it to give parents time to adjust.[1] For 2025-26 it gave a one-time relaxation (5 years 5 months, for children who had completed UKG or three years of Anganwadi).[5] For 2026-27 it allowed a 60-day relaxation.[2]

Is waiting an extra year a bad thing?

Many parents worry that starting Class 1 at six means their child "loses a year". In reality, those early years are some of the most valuable in a child's life. NEP 2020 points out that over 85% of a child's cumulative brain development happens before the age of six, and calls for play-based, activity-based learning in these years.[3]

An extra year of good preschool is time spent building the foundations that make Class 1 easier: language, early number sense, attention, independence and confidence.

How to plan your child's preschool path

  1. Start from the Class 1 year. Work out the June in which your child will be six. That is the year they can join Class 1 (subject to that year's rule).
  2. Count backwards. The year before is UKG, the year before that is LKG, and so on.
  3. Watch birthdays in June and July. Children born close to the 1 June cut-off are the ones most affected when rules or relaxations change.
  4. Keep documents ready. A birth certificate is needed for admission, and records of preschool or Anganwadi attendance helped families in 2025-26.[5]

Signs your child is getting ready for Class 1

Age is the legal rule, but readiness is about more than age. Teachers usually look for children who can:

  • Sit and listen to a short story or instruction
  • Use the toilet, eat and manage their bag on their own
  • Hold a pencil and try to write their name
  • Express needs and feelings in words
  • Play and take turns with other children
